20” J Mood Ride, 1978 grams

The ‘J Mood’ refers to the late and great Johan Van de Sijpe, who was an inspiration and mentor of mine.

This is a sabian AAX modification that was hammered with 3 different hammers and put on the lathe twice. A ‘foundation’ of large hammer marks started the mod. These become more or less invisible underneath the ever decreasing size and weight of the two hammers that followed.

This adds complexity and spread, but if executed correctly keeps the trash in check. I’m of the opinion that abundant trash is the domain of the effects cymbal and too much in a normal modification is a sign of overly simplistic hammering execution and/or strategy.

There’s a lot of hammering on this cymbal but it was the product of careful planning and execution.
