Over-Lathing

Over-Lathing is a technique where a flatter faced lathing tool bit is used to reduce the height of the tonal grooves, after the regular lathing has been completed.

The idea is to replicate some of the effects of a naturally ‘played in’ ride, in which case the continual friction of the stick and also any other possible friction (eg being pulled in and out of a cymbal bag) has naturally worn down the tonal grooves.

This old stamp clone features over-lathing and is most prominent near the edge and a few inches in from the edge -
